Artists Revealed - Portraits of artists by photographers.

August 1 to 31, 2009

Artists Reception - August 7, 2009,  at Stellar Gallery

Artists Revealed, an exhibition of photographic portraits of artists will open at Stellar Gallery in Oakhurst on August 1st, 2009.  A reception will be held on August 7th from 5 to 8 PM.  The exhibit is the first of many special exhibits organized and promoted by Sierra Art Trails , an Oakhurst based non-profit organization dedicated to supporting artists and artisans, and to promoting cultural tourism in the Madera and Mariposa County foothills.

Images in “Artists Revealed” portray artists working in many disciplines, including visual artists, writers, musicians, actors, dancers, and poets.  Some of the most photographed subjects include sculptor Norma Rogers , painter Judy DeRosa, and many other artists that live and work in the area. The Show offers works by more than twenty photographers including gallery owner and computer artist Jonathan Bock, landscape photographer and publisher Mark Heliger , Mariposa photographer and Vintner Marvin Silver, and  Fresno photographer Gary Vann.  The exhibit is curated by David Hoffman, and will include a selection of Hoffman's black and white portraits of artists participating in the Sierra Art Trails Open Studio Tour.

Self Portrait by Anne Grandy

The photographs selected for the show are not standard portrait studio head shots.  A photograph might, for instance, capture an artist in a contemplative moment, or posed in an environment particularly significant to him or her.  Interesting lighting and compelling composition were important factors in choosing the images to be included in the exhibit.  The portrayal of the spirit or essence of the artist’s character, or the character of their work, was also a strong consideration.

The idea for the show grew from Hoffman and others shooting portraits of artists participating in Sierra Art Trails , and blossomed into an exhibit focused on celebrating the importance of the creative arts in all disciplines.  The exhibit encourages collaboration and interaction between photographers and their subjects, resulting in a show that celebrates the art of photography and the creative spirit.

Cash awards will be made for first through third places among the juried entries.

$300 USD - for Best of Show, $100 USD for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes.
