In 2009 a group of artists gathered in the tiny historic gold mining town of Hornitos, California to create an exhibit focused on The Day of the Dead . With a population of less
than 100 people, Hornitos is a living ghost town with a rich history of
mining, ranching, and banditry on the lawless frontier! The Day of the Dead has been celebrated in Hornitos for 100 years with a candlelight procession from the town plaza to Saint Catherine's Church and the surrounding graveyard, located on a low hill overlooking the town. As evening draws near, people gather in the Plaza. Candles are lit in the graveyard and along the procession route. The procession begins just after dusk and culminates with outdoor ceremonies at the cemetery, followed by mass at St. Catherine’s. It is a lovely and moving event, and a chance to honor friends and loved ones who have passed on. The art exhibit took place in the historic Pacific Saloon building ( 1861 ) located on the Central Plaza, and consisted of a wide range of work including photography, painting, ceramics, and sculpture. Many of the participating artists have personal connections to the area and the event, attending the ceremonies for many years, or painting and photographing in Hornitos and the surrounding area. The exhibit at Arte Americas will recreate the Hornitos exhibit, with some new works as well. Ultimately the work presented is a personal experience for each artist, reflecting their own experience and relationship with the event, the area, and the dead. |
