Chinese Country furniture first became popular in the West in the 1990s, and appeals to a wide audience, from lovers of Asian art to people who never thought they would be attracted to Asian style. Chinese Country differs from what is typically referred to as “Palace Furniture”, intricately carved and lacquered furnishings of Chinese emperors and nobility, popular in the US and Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Chinese Country is the furniture of the people, collected from throughout China. Despite humble origins it has a nobility if its own, evoked by a strong sense of history, generations of use, and the telltale signs of day-to-day wear. The style combines simple, yet elegant lines with a sense of practicality and vigor. Some pieces are hand-painted in traditional orange, red, green, and black, often decorated with Chinese motifs. Others have natural wood finishes, or are painted in brilliant color inspired by contemporary styles. Surfaces are often heavily distressed, with multiple exposed paint layers, making the overall patina of the piece one if its most striking aspects. The prices are surprisingly low compared to prices routinely attached to classical Chinese furniture. Stellar gallery’s collection includes trunks, tables, benches, cabinets, and assorted accent pieces. These unique one-of-a-kind furnishings are displayed along with hand crafted ceramics and glass by local artists, and the stunning photographic images of Heidi Vetter, Joseph Holmes, Jeff Grandy, Christine Loberg, and others. By displaying the work together, the gallery presents its clients with an idea of how individual pieces or groupings will fit into their home. |
